Books Alive: I Like Myself

Hi! It’s Emily from Is This Really My Life. I’m super excited to be participating in Bettijo’s Books Alive series again this summer. Last time I shared one of my favorite Elephant & Piggie books along with a recipe for salted caramel swirl pecan ice cream. Mmm…now I want ice cream…

This year I had a hard time choosing a book because we are avid book readers in our home and our bookshelves are crammed with favorites. But a few children’s books stand out thanks to engaging illustrations and powerful messages. I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont is definitely one of them.

Don’t let the crazy cute illustrations and simple verse fool you—this book teaches one of the most important lessons of all: liking yourself just the way you are.

One of my favorite sections reads:

Inside, outside, upside down,
from head to toe and all around,
I like it all! It all is me!
And me is all I want to be.

And I don’t care in any way
what someone else may think or say.

Can I get an AMEN? Though written for children, I feel like this book is applicable to grownups as well.

One of the best illustrations features the main character with “purple polka-dotted lips.” That was the inspiration for the recipe I’m sharing today: purple polka-dotted cream cheese sugar cookies.

Orange Marmalade Recipe

How to make delicious Orange Marmalade via @PagingSupermom

I have two orange trees in my backyard here in Arizona, and as they’ve matured, we have been blessed with more and more oranges… this year, more than we could eat and give away. I decided I should try making marmalade and don’t know why I never thought of it before — such a great way to preserve our oranges. My orange marmalade recipe is so delicious and fairly easy. It thickens up all on its own without store-bought pectin… I promise! (The lemon helps in that process.)

I ended up combining two recipes that I found online and had great success. My brother LOVES this marmalade and says that eating it on good toast with peanut butter seriously takes it to the next level. You can cut your peels smaller than suggested and experiment with sugar amounts depending on how bitter you like your marmalade. Give it a try, you will feel so accomplished with yourself!

The Best Homemade Lemonade Recipe

Best Homemade Lemonade Recipe via @PagingSupermom

It’s feeling a lot like Spring, and I thought you might like a peek into how my new kitchen is looking these days. Plus I have the best Lemonade Recipe to share with you today!

Just over a year ago we had begun our prep work for the kitchen remodel (we chronicled the whole ordeal on Instagram check out the tag #SeventiesKitchenRehab). You should see how it looked before (YIKES!) Now that the remodel is complete, the kitchen — with it’s gorgeous all-white Kraftmaid cabinets — seriously makes me smile everyday.

I still love the original decor with blue and yellow accents (if you missed that big reveal, go here to check it out), but I thought it would be fun to change things up a bit for Spring. I found this pink and yellow stripe rug at IKEA for a steal and then swapped out the blue pillows for pink ones on the window seat. Finally I added a pink dishtowel, and it’s a whole new look.

I love that the white cabinets and gray + white backsplash create such a neutral backdrop. Of course I’ve got big pops of yellow on the stools and sconce lights, but for now I’m loving the yellow and it’s easy to pair with another color. Plus if I ever do tire of the yellow, it’s just a couple cans of spray paint away from being new again.

Now let’s talk lemonade! I think most people associate lemons with summertime, but the lemon trees here in Phoenix have their fruit on in the winter. So we’re all about the lemons from about January through March. Just a few weeks ago the citrus blossoms were on the trees and making everything smell just heavenly too… I just love spring!

My kids and I were recently picking citrus in my friend’s backyard, and she shared a recipe that an old mutual friend had given to her for homemade lemonade.

How to Have a Toast Bar

How to Host a Toast Bar via @PagingSupermom

I’ve had this idea to do a Toast Bar for over a year, but I’ve just been waiting for the right event to come along. I was originally thinking a Toast Bar would be perfect for a bridal shower or baby shower, but when I decided to host an open house to show off my new kitchen, I figured a Toast Bar would be perfect.

I wanted to allow guests to make the toast themselves, so the toaster became the centerpiece on the food table, which, of course, means you need a cute toaster! My long-time favorite has been these classic metal toasters from Cuisinart, and luckily they gladly sent over the toasters for this event. Aren’t they pretty?? It also comes in a 2-slice version, but for this party I think the 4-slice is a must.

My daughter Attalie is so clever, and she thinks I should call this party a “Toast Jam” instead of a “Toast Bar.” Either way I definitely think this needs to be a thing! I mean really, who doesn’t love toast, especially when you have a bunch of breads and spreads to choose from.

Of course toast needs to be eaten fresh and hot, and logistically I didn’t want guests to have to wait forever to use the toaster, so I figured two toasters would be perfect for my crowd. For groups with more than 50 guests you might want to consider additional toasters.
