Since we live in Phoenix, Arizona my kids won’t be waking up to a Snow Day any time soon. However, last week we had an unexpected early release from school due to RAIN! Thankfully we weren’t experiencing any flooding around our home and main roadways, but other families weren’t so lucky.
On our wet drive home from school, we spent a few minutes talking about why heavy doses of rain in the desert can be dangerous and why school was cut short. In all honesty, I tried to sound serious, but I think my boys saw right through me. I was way too excited to have the extra time with them to bake cookies and to splash in our backyard puddles to really sell the idea that bringing them home was for their safety.
Anyway, as we talked about what makes the desert unique, we got to comparing our hikes we take on our annual cabin trip up north in Pinetop, to our hikes on our nearby community trails. While both hikes require water and parental supervision, our surroundings are fairly different.
This week’s worksheet is more of an activity — take your littles outside and point out the plants that make living in the desert Arizona so different. We have a hard time spotting conifer trees nearby (which is probably why most Phoenicians use artificial Christmas trees), but we can see thousands of saguaro cacti from our backyard.

I always enjoy reading, “Paging Supermom”. I babysit two wonderful girls and I wrote a book for them. I was encouraged to have it published. I wanted to share it with you. If you are interested I have a coloring pictures that goes with my book too. You can read the whole story of Mr. Blue on my author page.
