Today’s installment of the Books Alive summer reading & activity series is from our fabulous friend Kim from The TomKat Studio.

I am so excited to be posting today for this Summer Reading Series! I love flamingos, so when I spotted this book, Flora and the Flamingo, I knew I had to get it for my daughter, Kate. The illustration and typography on the cover sold me without even opening the book. Once we “read” it together, I realized that it is a picture book with no words. The gorgeous illustrations tell a story of a girl and a flamingo who explore their friendship through synchronized dance. Kate was so, so cute and made up her own story to tell me while looking at the pictures. From the publisher, Chronicle Books:
In this innovative wordless picture book with interactive flaps, Flora and her graceful flamingo friend explore the trials and joys of friendship through an elaborate synchronized dance. With a twist, a turn, and even a flop, these unlikely friends learn at last how to dance together in perfect harmony. Full of humor and heart, this stunning performance (and splashy ending!) will have readers clapping for more!

I loved that it challenged Kate to be creative and come up with her own story to tell about this adorable duo. For our book-inspired craft, we decided to create a flamingo paper puppet dance recital!
