The Magic of Sprinkles

oatmeal

I’ve been trying really hard to wean my boys off cold cereal for breakfast. What a task!!! They, like their Superdad, could eat cold cereal for every meal. Not me. When I eat cereal, I’m hungry moments later. Plus, let’s be honest: there are healthier options for breakfast.

Lately I’ve been really into oatmeal (or cottage cheese) with blueberries sprinkled on top. Since that’s my favorite go-to breakfast, I thought I would convert my kids. They weren’t thrilled. So, the next morning I told them we were having TREATS for breakfast… oatmeal with sprinkles! Both boys bought it! Now, oatmeal, with less than 1/8 teaspoon of sprinkles is considered a treat for breakfast.

And the best thing about sprinkles, they come in every shape, size and color. (I’m thinking it’s time to pull out the Halloween sprinkles!)

This same trick worked for applesauce and cottage cheese. Hmm…….what other healthy food can I disguise as a treat with a few sprinkles…?

  1. Our kids like oatmeal, provided it has enough sugar to counteract any healthy aspects of the food, however their preferred hot cereal is Cream of Wheat.

  2. Good tip!! I found this secret when I went to England. If I put sugar with cream (I guess it’s whipping cream here), the girls devour their oatmeal. I even like it and I’m not an oatmeal person! Also make it with milk instead of water…I guess the creamier the better! So I guess pretty fattening but little bodies can handle that right? Add a some strawberries or blueberries and it’s amazing!
