Last Fall I couldn’t help but fall in love with this adorable gold geo Thanksgiving collection that our friends over at Caravan Shoppe created. At first glance I was ready to do it, but then when I realized I had to cut out each of the triangles with a craft knife I suddenly got a lot less excited. Enter the new Cricut Explore that just went on sale today and suddenly this project got a whole lot easier.
You might have seen on our Instagram feed that Cricut invited Aimee and I to their Explore launch party back in January. They sent us one of the new machines to test out, and since Thanksgiving is too far away, a golden Cracked Egg Art Print for Easter sounded perfect. So I designed one and put my new Cricut Explore to the test. It was fabulous to sit back and watch the machine work its magic.
I’ve used Cricut cutting machines in the past and must admit I was not a fan. It was frustrating to use only their designs, and the cutting cartridges were expensive. The Explore machine works with a new, web-based Cricut Design Space that is a real game changer. Finding shapes is easier since you can quickly search through their whole database, and I love that when you login you are greeted by a bunch of project ideas preloaded so you can just sit down and get crafting at the click of a button.
There are some free shapes and others can be purchased a la carte starting at just 99 cents. Cricut also offers a subscription that provides access to thousands of images for a low monthly fee. Plus you can now upload your own artwork for free, which is what I did for this project. Download our Golden Cracked Egg cut file for free.
In addition to the flexible, new design space, Cricut has made improvements to the machine’s performance. The new Cricut Explore has a precision blade so you get crisp cuts as small as a quarter-inch tall and up to 11.5 inches wide by 23.5 inches tall. I could really tell this blade was better since the details in this egg art are so intricate — I think my old cutter would have made a mess of it. All around the experience is far more user friendly, and since the Cricut Explore will cut paper, poster board, fabric, vinyl and even leather… with the machine sitting on my desk now, the crafting possibilities are exhilirating!
The Golden Egg coordinates so well with our free printable Hop, Hop Banner.1
