Changing my son Tommy’s diaper was easy for the first few months. He would basically just lay there and look/smile/coo at me while I got him fixed up with a shiny new diaper. Things began to get difficult, however, when he discovered that he could twist at the waist. He figured this out around the same time that he began trying to crawl. Once the kid knew he wasn’t stuck in one place any longer, our peaceful diapering times were just over. But not for long!
Not sure where this inspiration came from, but…you know those little hooks you can find on the hardware aisle that just screw into the ceiling? Well, I grabbed one of those and decided to use it to hang a wind chime over the changing table. My hope was that during a change, Tommy would be so mesmerized by the chime, he would totally abandon his Chubby Checker routine. Believe it or not, he has! During diaper changes, he loves staring up at the colorful chime. If it seems like he’s about to start squirming, all I have to do is reach up and give the weight a push and the tinkling (of the chime!!) distracts him and allows me to finish the job.
And, to answer everyone’s question, yes, it does look extraordinarily tacky. Impressively tacky. But it has worked so, so well that honestly, I just don’t care!

I never thought of wind chimes — what a creative idea.
Amazing the things we think of as Moms that you can’t learn from a college degree :)
