I’m In Love

Iphone 4

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I thought I would talk about one of my new loves: my brand, spanking new iPhone. Yes, today is the official release date of the iPhone 4 on Verizon. I’ve been wanting an iPhone for a few years now, but I stand proudly among the large crowd of Verizon loyalists who denied themselves the iPhone in the name of reliable reception. I am part of that same crowd who stayed up last Wednesday night until 1am Arizona time to preorder a Verizon iPhone. I tracked my phone (on my iPad, of course) morning, noon and night until it arrived safely on Monday.

Actually, if you want the x-ray-vision truth, my phone was scheduled for delivery when I would be gone taking my boys to their weekly swimming lesson. (Is it sad that I count missing my phone delivery for swimming lessons to be a Supermom Moment?) The second we arrived home I called the UPS Warehouse and arranged to pick up my phone that evening. Funny thing is most people in the warehouse were there to pick up their missed iPhone delivery, too.

Anyway, last night at a party we were talking about apps and how they can help us busy Moms be more super (by finding family-friendly recipes with Epicurious) and they can teach our kids amazing things (like sign language from Signing Times).

So today as the nation celebrates the highly anticipated release of the Verizon iPhone 4, I thought I would turn the tables and ask for your help. What apps help you be Supermom? What app do you use the most? What are your kids’ favorite apps? Please comment below and tell us about your favorites!

  1. I like an app called Stack the States. Liam and I have played it a bunch on the iPad, and he really enjoys it (when I can tear him away from Angry Birds, that is). It helps teach state names, capitols, geographic location, shapes, facts, etc. It’s really probably geared towards grade school-age kids, but I guess this will give him a head start.

  2. Some of my favorite apps include Urbanspoon, where I can shake my phone to find restaurant choices when my indecisive husband and I are trying to find a place for dinner, MealBoard, where I can plan menus, with integrated recipes and shopping lists, Disneyland wait times, where my nine year old can constantly check how long the ride lines are to decide our riding strategy, and Alphabetic, where letters are whizzing and swirling by, so my four year old must quickly recognize and touch the letters in order before the timer is up. We also love Worsdsearch, which is a game of crossword puzzles. And, of course… Angry Birds. ;)

    • Urbanspoon sounds awesome! I think I’ll be downloading that tonight. And, I, too, have a four-year-old who would probably love Alphabetic. Thank you, Debbie!!

  3. I love an app called Shopper that lets me keep my lists for Target, the grocery store, the mall and others right at my finger tips – plus I can update them from home on their web interface. A bonus since I hate having to type everything into the iPhone. Same thing for Notespark. Books I want to read, movies I want to rent, things I have to return to people – I update my lists and notes constantly on my home computer. Then when I’m out and about, I have all my notes, info and to-dos with me. And check out FaceGoo. You can take a picture of someone and then twist, smush and add accessories to their face. Keeps the kids endlessly entertained.

    • Shopper sounds like the perfect app for a busy Supermom. And FaceGoo sounds like the perfect app to keep my kids occupied while I’m doing my shopping. Thank you for your comment!!

  4. My toddlers love Monkey Preschool Lunch Box, Memory Cards, and (oddly enough) CC Ninja. I’m really getting into Animoto’s app (which I heard about in your archives – thanks!

  5. Sorry, another game- doesn’t make my life easier but I could argue the stress reliever and educational factor I suppose. Alchemy is a pretty good game that makes you think just a little- you combine elements (earth, wind, fire, water) to make more complex elements at first such as rain and swamp then keep combining and building to make more complex and so on. It’s helping me build back my post pregnancy iq ;)
Also, a great supermom tool is the Magic 8 Ball App- I mean, do I really have to explain why?

    • Magic 8 Ball sounds SO fun… Yes, I can think of a million uses for that one.

Alchemy must be a great app. Sometimes after spending the entire day with my kids I could use a little help rebuilding my thinking skills. ;)

  6. Welcome to the club!! I’m a bit jealous that you’ll have the iPhone AND good cell service ;) I’m a big fan of iHatch — the app allows you to take a photo of yourself & a photo of someone else and put them together to see what your child would look like!! The babies are rather goofy looking but the kids think they are HILARIOUS!! My boys giggle like crazy! Oh, and the fact that my hubby & his buddies designed it makes it even cooler :)

  7. All great apps! I love flixter. It allows you to watch movie trailers, read reviews and look at show times. It is great to watch a short clip of the film before committing time and money for a show.

  8. I couldn’t wait and got a droid but I can’t wait to get the iphone when I can convince my husband! All I know is that there are so many more apps for the iphone than droid but I love the ones I have! I especially love map my run which I think can go on the iphone. If you are a runner, it is A-MAZING! It maps how far you go, how many calories you burn, etc. But my kids have a ton of games they play (although I try to limit their use) Right now their favorite is angry birds..Have fun with your new Iphone Aimee!!
