Colorful Family-Friendly New Years Party Ideas

Today I’ve teamed up with the Chinet brand to bring you some colorful family-friendly New Year’s party ideas. Since babysitters are impossible to find, I’ve begun hosting a kid-friendly New Year’s Eve party. I try to make our New Year’s party as low-stress as possible because coming right after Christmas, I just want to relax and celebrate. I usually don’t prepare for this party ahead of time, which helps keep me from stressing, but I decided to bend that rule a little when the Chinet brand asked me to put together some fun New Year’s Eve party ideas.

I knew right away that I wanted to do an Italian Soda Bar because my kids have so much fun mixing up the drinks, and it seemed perfect for a family-friendly New Year’s party. The real stroke of genius was when I remembered seeing a story wall like this in a Kate Spade boutique. I knew I had to create something similar with a New Year’s Toast poster for the wall, and that is how my New Year’s Toast Soda Bar was born!

For a soda bar, strong glasses are a must! I love the rigid plastic and elegant styling of the Chinet® Cut Crystal® collection. It includes a full line of sturdy dinner and dessert plates, cups, wine glasses and cutlery that all coordinate, and the clear design goes with everything. Chinet’s new Cut Crystal® stemless wine glasses are a perfect size for Italian Sodas.

The one drawback of an Italian Soda Bar is that things can get messy fast… especially when you’ve got kiddos mixing up their own drinks. With this Italian Soda Bar setup, I used Chinet® Cut Crystal® dinner plates to catch the drips and spills. The Chinet® plates are totally transparent, so they can do double-duty as soda mixing instruction signs. I created these step-by-step Italian Soda Bar instruction signs to go on the back of the plates and walk guests through the process of mixing up their drinks. The free printable Italian Soda Bar instruction signs are in my Ultimate New Years Party Decor Pack — just sign up in the box below, and I’ll email it over!

Family-friendly New Year’s Party Ideas

I shared this stylish Black, White & Gold, family-friendly New Year’s Eve bash several years ago. It has the cutest Kate-Spade inspired black-and-white stripe printables, and I have used this free printable New Years banner every year since. It’s a classic, timeless design that I still love, so I decided to build off of it for this New Year’s Toast Italian Soda Bar.

How to Make the New Year’s Toast Poster

This New Year’s Toast Poster is the big WOW for this family-friendly New Year’s party, and it’s simple to make. First, you’ll need my free printable template (just fill out the form above, and I’ll email it over to you.) Print the poster template as a 36×48-inch, black & white engineering print. Don’t be intimidated — you can quickly submit the print order through Office Depot or Staples website, and it should cost less than $10 — they even offer delivery!

Next collect all these fun objects to glue onto your poster:

BOOK: I used an old Moleskin pocket date book, which if you’re buying the old year’s edition you could probably find a pretty great deal right about now! Any little book (measuring about 3×5 inches) will work — even a little spiral notebook. Ahead of time, you may want to leave your book open to the desired page with a weight on top of it, to help it lay flat when you glue it on your poster. I used hot glue to attach the cover to the poster, and I glued down some of the pages to keep it open.

BALLOONS: these are pretty straightforward, I used green, but you can use whatever color balloons you like or have handy. Hot glue would probably melt balloons, so I attached these with my favorite Scotch brand glue dots.

CONFETTI: I found the perfect colorful, big-circle paper confetti on Amazon. A glue stick is the best way to attach the confetti pieces. You glue each piece individually, which I know sounds tedious, but it truly just took a couple minutes. Liquid school glue will make the confetti wrinkle and discolor, and the hot glue just got messy.

GLASSES: The new Chinet® Cut Crystal® stemless wine glasses were perfect for my New Year’s Toast Poster. They were sturdy enough to be glittered, but still lightweight enough to glue to the poster. To apply glitter, I applied tacky glue with a foam brush, and then sprinkled on coarse gold glitter. I let them sit upside down to dry. After the glittered cups were completely dry, I used hot glue to secure them to the poster.

My favorite way to hang up these large engineering prints is with Scotch brand mounting putty, but I knew I would need something stronger to support the weight of the glued-on objects. I used three of the Command Hook & Loop hanging strips, evenly spaced along the top of the poster. I did have to use a bit of the mounting putty beneath the area with the glasses, to prevent the poster from bowing out right there.

I love the way the glittered stemless wine glasses look, and I briefly entertained the idea of glittering all the glasses for my party. By the time I got through glittering just those three for the poster, I had nixed that idea. It took me about 3-4 minutes to glitter each glass, plus I was having to stick my hand all up inside them… kind of gross to have someone drink out of after. Not to mention that glitter would be in everyone’s drink! The glitter is perfect for the poster, and the glasses look nice on their own, but if you really want to doll up the glasses these “Happy New Year” punchables are a much faster way.

The template is designed to be punched out with a circle punch ranging from 1.5-inch to 3-inches. For the Stemless Wine Glasses you’ll want to use the 1.5-inch punch like I did. You’ll need a 2-inch punch to fit the other Chinet® Cut Crystal® glasses. You can also use these punchables to create cupcake or muffin toppers or picks to stick in sandwiches. Even scatter them with the confetti on a table.

To attach to the glasses, print the template on cardstock, and cut out each circle. Then apply 4 small dots of hot glue to the ridge on the bottom of your glasses, and stick on the circle with the design facing up.

I made this template editable so you can change the year! Just sign up in the box below, and I will email over my free Ultimate New Year’s Party Printables pack.

I also created decorative circles that you can attach in the same way to the back of the Chinet® Cut Crystal® dessert plates. At first I thought I was going to apply a bead of hot glue all around the rim on the bottom of my plate, but that looked so messy. Instead, I just added 4-5 small dots around the rim. After applying a dot of glue, press down and sort of wipe your tip off to prevent those stringy threads of glue from going all over your plate. Quickly apply the dots then press on the decorative backing with the design facing the top.
