As you know we’ve been having lots of fun with the new Cricut machine. The Cricut Explore allows us to cut our own designs, which is so awesome. There is even a new Print then Cut feature that we’re dying to try out. (If only there was more time!) So when Aimée designed these killer cute webs for our Creepy Banner, we knew we wanted to cut out some webs to spook up our favorite straight-sided jars.
We filled our jar with Spider Egg Popcorn (recipe here), but it would also make a fabulous party punch bowl, and it would be perfect for holding candy for trick or treaters.
We set up two cut file variations — one with a larger and smaller web and another that has four smaller webs. These are designed so you can cut the most webs possible from a 12×12 piece of material. We had an extra web after covering our jar so we added one to our favorite Cuatro serving platters.
Since we use our jars and platters all the time, we didn’t want to add any permanent decorations. Cricut’s new Window Cling material is the perfect option — it adheres without any adhesive so there is no mess when you remove. Also if you save the backing paper you can peel off the webs when you’re through and save them to reuse year after year.
TO MAKE: Find our free Spider Web designs over in Cricut’s Design Space. Place a 12×12 section of black or white window cling material onto your cutting mat, and follow the machine instructions to cut. Use the weeding tool (the one in the photo that looks like something a dentist would use) to remove all the extra pieces between the strands of the web. Carefully clean the jar, platter or other surface you’d like to decorate. Place the webs as desired. We found it easiest to lay the cling flat and press the object into the cling — the material adheres very easily to any nonporous surface, and it is completely re-positionable and reusable so no stress. Place multiple webs with the ends touching as desired to create a spooky look.
In case you were wondering, that jar is a classic Anchor Hocking Heritage Jar, which come in a variety of sizes. Both Aimée and I have several in each size because they are a total party staple. If you don’t have any they would be a great thing to add to your wish list.
Cute idea! I love that popcorn scooper thingee. Where can I find one like that?
