Books Alive: The Duckling Gets a Cookie

We’re continuing with our Books Alive, our summer reading & activity series. Today we hear from our fun friend Holly from My Sister’s Suitcase.

Reading with the kids before bedtime is a special ritual in my house! Everyone in our family enjoys Mo Willems books… and one of our all-time favorites is The Duckling Gets a Cookie.

If you haven’t read this one, you must! The pigeon is so upset that he doesn’t have a cookie, because “ducklings always get everything!” In the end, he ends up with one of his favorite cookies (chocolate chip with nuts) and the duckling gets what he wanted in the first place… a cookie with NO nuts! To incorporate this story into one of our other loved pastimes, I created a cookie game to play as a family.

TO PLAY: Each player gets his or her own cookie rack to “bake” cookies. The players create different types of cookies, one ingredient at a time, by rolling the dice. Each player rolls a pair of dice to get the ingredients required to make the cookies. The object of the game is to be the first “baker” to reach 10 points. You earn points by completing a certain type of cookie. The harder it is to create, the more points you get!

TO MAKE: To create the cookie game pieces, I cut the shapes out of felt using objects around my house to trace. For the cookies, I used cups from the kitchen, for the M&Ms I used the end of my chapstick, and for the chocolate chips and nuts, I just free-handed it! My plain and sugar cookies are approximately 3.75 ” in diameter, and the oreos are 2.75″. Here is how it all looked when I was done cutting:

I wanted to make the packaging and “game board” more fun, so I went to a local kitchen supply store and found some great stuff! I used a mini cookie sheet with a lid to hold the entire game, and some other baking accessories to hold the game pieces.

How cute are these little baking racks I picked up for each player?

The ultimate test was playing this game with my 9-year-old, 6-year-old and 3-year-old. They all loved it! I think there is something special about playing a homemade game together. It is simple enough for my youngest kids, but requires a little bit of strategy to reach 10 points first, so my oldest enjoys it too. My 6-year-old is the one who came up with the name, “Cookie Collector,” and I think it fits perfectly. I hope you and your family will enjoy it just as much as we have!

Here are the complete rules to the game. Be sure to download the rules to print and tuck away with your game set.
