Books Alive: Alice the Fairy

We are happy to have our friend Mique from Thirty Handmade Days visiting. She’s sharing her love of reading and baking with us today as part of our Books Alive summer reading series.

I grew up with parents who looooved to read. They never had a TV in their room and read every night before bed for at least an hour. It wasn’t until I was in about fifth grade that I fell in love with The Baby-Sitter’s Club. But then I was hooked — books had my heart, and I read every BSC book I could get my hands on. This was back in the day before Amazon Prime 2-day shipping and ordering books at your library online. It was so tough growing up in the 80s/90s. Kidding! Now there are so many distractions and kids plugged in to electronics, that it’s a real challenge to get kids to read. I love being a part of this series because I am a huge fan of encouraging kids to read.

We (ahem maybe me more than anyone…) are huge David Shannon fans in my house. I love his illustrations and the sweet story lines in every book he creates. No David, A Bad Case of the Stripes, and The Rain Came Down are a few of our favorites. But today we chose to focus on Alice the Fairy. I love that little Alice.

In addition to reading books we like to spend time in the kitchen together baking. My youngest, who is 8 years old, loves making cookies with me. It might be that I let him lick the beater only if he helps. But for now, I’m choosing to believe that it’s really just that he loves being with his mom. He was happy that we got to bake these yummy Fairy Dust Sugar Cookies together based on Alice the Fairy. I let Drew be a major part of this one with cracking eggs, measuring, mixing and then rolling them all into balls and sugaring them.

FAIRY DUST SUGAR COOKIES RECIPE
:: 1 cup sugar
:: 1 cup oil
:: 1-1/2 teaspoon vanilla
:: 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
:: 1 cup butter
:: 2 eggs
:: 4 cup flour
:: Optional- colored sanding sugar

TO MAKE: Cream butter, oil, and sugar for approximately 2 minutes. Beat in the eggs and vanilla. Sift the dry ingredients and gradually add to wet mix. Roll dough into balls and dip in powdered, granulated or sanding sugar. Press down with a glass to flatten slightly. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes (depending on your oven) until edges are just *slightly* brown. Don’t overbake!
