Worksheet Wednesday: Letter Matching

Lettermatchingjpg

Harrison loves making capital H’s. In fact, if he finds a writing utensil, watch out! He will cover paper (or table surfaces) with his signature letter. So, the other day we were doodling together and I drew lowercase h’s. He was NOT impressed. Then it occurred to me, there are some letters he tends to gravitate towards the uppercase version. Do your little ones do this? I’m pretty sure he knows the difference, but I thought this simple worksheet would give us the chance to review upper and lowercase letters. (And if nothing else, the backside will end up with some great capital H’s.)

By the way, I’m curious: do you teach your children to write their names in all uppercase letters? I actually taught both my boys to write their names beginning with a capital letter followed by lowercase.

  1. My kids learned initially with all caps but seemed to easily switch to initial cap/lower case (I have four kids, so this is how I’m remember it in this moment). After they mastered their first names, I taught all of them to write our last name with initial cap/lc (and ours is eight letters) and they all did it beautifully when they learned, but I discovered early on that school doesn’t want it. The teachers find it easier to have them be First Name and # with the date on the top of their work (Harrison #17 4/25/12). GAH! So, my rule is that for any work that comes home, it goes back with full name, etc. My older two (4th and 2nd graders) have tried to argue this on less than fun homework nights to no avail…even the Kindergartener and preschooler tell them to write the last name.

  2. My son is learning all capitals in 4K.
I am just starting him on recognizing the lower case letters. I think once they master the uppercase, then they can learn the lower case.
I think it goes in steps at school.

  3. Love the free printouts; however, on the Letter Matching printout….how do I get the back side or 2nd sheet? This was doesn’t have the letters C,O, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y or Z. Thank you.

  5. Hi – I work for my local Head Start and would love more of the letter matching worksheets with the other letters of the alphabet that are not currently on your letter matching worksheet. Do you have something like that?

  6. I teach kindergarten and I found this sight looking for some worksheets for my lower kiddos. I wish that preschools taught lowercase letters first, and taught the children to write their name correctly (capital letter first letter, all the rest lowercase). When we read and write in kindergarten most everything is lowercase. Just like, on what I am writing here, there is are only two uppercase letter besides the I’s. And the children are taught that “capital I spells “I”. Lowercase letters are so much more important.
