Our family gets photos taken every year for our annual New Year’s card and calendar. We just had our photo shoot, and I’ve been meaning to share our outfit inspiration board:
Piper’s brown zig-zag dress by Missoni for Target was my main inspiration piece, and kind of got me going on a retro-glam vibe. Although there is technically no red in Piper’s dress, Attalie’s tomato-colored shift ties into the pattern’s salmon hues and adds a nice jolt of energy and playfulness. I really wanted new baby Modette to shine, so I found this aqua tulle number that contrasts nicely to both the red and brown, making her the subtle star of the show. I love how well each dress suits my three girls’ distinctive personalities.
I was pretty excited about the fun location I found: Arizona Falls is a hydroelectric power plant for one of the local utility companies featuring industrial architecture. We scoped out the location the day before our scheduled shoot. It was a nice Fall day — not too hot or cold, no wind and pretty typical of an Arizona November. The location was PERFECT with lots of interesting backdrops, and the girls were so fascinated by the waterfalls that I actually thought to myself, “It’s going to be no problem to get good smiles out of the kids at this spot!” JINX!! I really shouldn’t have said that…
That night Piper came down with the flu, and we had to postpone our shoot to the following week. Come photo day, the weather had dropped 10 degrees, it was rainy and very windy, which meant even when it wasn’t raining we had lots of mist blowing from the waterfalls. The girls were cold, cranky and Piper scowled through the entire shoot. I was sure there would be nothing usable, but I just saw a sneak peek on photographer Erika’s blog — she’s a miracle worker. Go see!
LOVE!
I’m a first time mom. and having an annual photo for special occasions like christmas and new year seem to be a great a idea. you have a beautiful family, by the way.
I’m in the midst of planning our family outfits right now. It’s very tricky…laying everything out, over buying (leaving tags on until we know for sure of the look), keep changing my mind about colours…..at this rate it won’t be happening for Christmas, but perhaps we can aim for a new year photo. Love that idea. Your photos are great contrary to the blasted weather you had!!!!!
This is one of my favorite places to visit with my boys. It is on our beat the heat list for summer picnics! Love the novel family picture location.
