Join the #SupermomTreeParade

Today we’re kicking off our second annual #SupermomTreeParade on Instagram. This virtual tree parade lasts all week, and we would like to invite you to join in on the fun. Just take a photo of your Christmas Tree, share it on Instagram and be sure to tag #SupermomTreeParade @PagingSupermom so we will see it. To make things even more interesting, our friends over at The Land of Nod are offering a $200 gift card to one lucky parade entry (see contest rules below). So be sure to snap and share a picture of your tree!

Now I wanted to talk about decorating trees for a minute… I’m actually a recovering tree perfectionist. In the years before we had children, I had a strict color palette and style for my tree — it really was beautiful. Of course I coordinated the wrapped gifts with the tree decor, and at night I would go into the front room, turn off all the lights except the tree and just sit and soak it all in as I sipped hot cocoa. It really was magical.

When we started having kids it was no problem to continue decorating the tree just the way I liked it, but as they’ve grown it’s become more difficult. Over the years as the kids have made and collected lots and lots of colorful ornaments, it’s nearly impossible to keep the strict colors and style I wanted. They love getting their ornaments out each year to put on the tree, and it was difficult for me to let them stick their bright, red Santa ornament right smack in the middle of my blue, green and silver tree masterpiece. I’d bite my lip and promise myself to move it later… around to one of the sides where it wouldn’t be so visible. Clearly I was having trouble meshing what was magical for me with what was magical for the kids.

Some families (Aimée’s included) have solved this dilemma by having more than one tree, but I’ve never been able to face the task of taking down a second tree. So this year I decided to try something different. Inspired by the Polygon Ornaments and All the Colors of the Rainbow ornaments from The Land of Nod, I decided to create an Eclectic Family Tree. One where those carefully crafted pre-school creations will be right at home next to my heirloom favorite from my grandmother (shown above), and that hopefully still looks pulled together.

The Land of Nod has a bunch of fun tree decor, and they are having a sale right now!) We also got the Holiday Lights Garland :: Gem Ornaments :: Nightfall Ornaments.

I’ll probably still coordinate the wrapping paper… I can’t change who I am completely, but I know the kids are loving the result. What do you think? Does it still look stylish or just hodge podge??
