My Cricut Explore has been pretty busy this week as we are preparing for my sister’s wedding Friday. (Yes things are utter chaos around here right now!) But we were invited to participate in the Cricut Design Space Star challenge, and with summer travels we missed the first round of projects. We really wanted to get into the game this month so we took a quick break from wedding stuff to bring you this fun Knee-Patch legging tutorial.
Just in case anyone is keeping track… this month’s Design Space Star Challenge: Fashion or Gear, and our team’s theme is Black and White.
We’ve used the Cricut Iron On to make t-shirts (here and here), but we figured we’d branch out a bit. We created a Mod Flower and Rock Star design, to create cute knee-patches for leggings with a little more kick! My girls practically live in leggings so it was a natural choice.
SUPPLIES
:: Cricut Explore and Cutting Mat
:: Leggings
:: Iron On Material
:: Weeding Tool (tweezers or craft knife could work too)
:: Iron and Thin Towel
TO MAKE
1 :: Place your iron-on material with the shiny side DOWN (this is very important!) and cut out the desired shape. You can adjust the size of your cutout in the free Cricut Design Space software, which means you can really make these for any size (or make them even larger for a t-shirt!). We made size 2T and 3T leggings and cut our shapes at 2.25 inches on the shortest side. Be sure your machine’s dial is set to “Iron On” and follow all the prompts — it’s easy.
2 :: After cutting the shape, remove the iron on material from the cutting mat. Holding the piece with the shiny side down, peel back and remove the extra stuff around your shape.
3 :: Be sure to remove any of the details inside your shape. This part is what we like to call “weeding” and a pointy tool will come in handy.
4 :: You will be left with only the part you want to iron on affixed to a shiny backer paper. Now position the shape where desired with the shiny side up this time. We love how that clear backing makes it easy to see where the shape will go. It’s even a little sticky so don’t be afraid to press it down and try it on before ironing — until you set it with the heat you can reposition it as desired. Once you’ve got it just right, place a thin towel between your iron and the plastic and press for a minute or so. Flip your item over and iron on the back as well. This post is our entry into the Cricut Design Space Star Challenge — wish us good luck!
