Poison Ivy Bath Salts

My bath salt recipe was in Whole Living this month (yay!) so Piper and I decided to whip up a batch while Atty was at school.

Making Bath Salts

The recipe is pretty simple so she was able to do a lot of it by herself — a bonus since this three year old is very independent and does NOT like help.

INGREDIENTS:
4 cups sea salt
1 cup epsom salt
1 cup baking soda
1/4 cup dried rose, calendula or citrus rinds
1/4 tsp bergamot or grapefruit essential oil

INSTRUCTIONS:
Combine the salt and baking soda and smooth out any clumps. Thoroughly mix one cup of dry mixture with essential oil then add it back to the rest along with petals or citrus. Mix well.

Since we’ve got Halloween on the brain, we decided to make Poison Ivy Bath Salts. We substituted mint leaves for the dried flowers and used 1/4-teaspoon bergamot and 1/4-teaspoon vanilla extract. This batch has a nice green, woodsy aroma that seems like it could have been made by a witch.

To package up bath salts I love to use glass jars. Ours came from Hobby Lobby (we spray painted the wooden lids and spoons), but use whatever is handy — even a canning jar would be cute.

For labels I initially wanted parchment paper to give an old fashioned feel, but since I didn’t have any on hand, I used green paper instead. Here is the printable Poison Ivy label template we used. (I also included blank ingredients labels in case you alter the recipe.)

After cutting out the labels I decoupaged them onto the jars. The glue not only adheres the label but also provides water resistance. Don’t worry if you get some air bubbles (I always seem to have this trouble when decoupaging, not sure what I do wrong?), but luckily for this project I think a little bubbled/wrinkled label only adds to the feel. I mean who knows how long this jar has been sitting on the shelf in that witch’s cellar?
